Terms of Service
Effective date: 7 July 2026 · Last updated: 7 July 2026
These terms are an agreement between you and John Bird, trading as Mila (mila.menu), a sole trader based in the United Kingdom (“Mila”, “we”, “us”). By creating an account or subscribing to Mila Pro, you agree to them.
1. Who we are and what Mila is
Mila is a meal-planning tool, currently in a closed, invite-only pilot. It helps you plan a week of meals, build a shopping list, and cook — with particular care around household allergens. It is run by John Bird as a sole trader in the United Kingdom. Mila is a planning aid, not a source of medical or dietary advice.
You can reach us at the contact address in section 9. A postal address for formal correspondence is available on request during the invite-only pilot.
If Mila later becomes a limited company, the party you are contracting with will change — that is a material change, and we will ask you to agree to updated terms (see section 8).
2. Your account
Please give accurate information when you sign up, keep your password safe, and let us know if you think someone else has your login. One account is for one household. You are responsible for what happens under your account.
3. Mila Pro subscription
Most of Mila is free. Mila Pro unlocks the planning actions that cost us money to run — creating new weekly plans, swapping meals, and importing recipes.
- Price: £4.99 per month, or £39.99 per year. Prices include VAT.
- Free trial: your first subscription starts with a 14-day free trial. We collect your card at the start, but you are not charged until the trial ends, and you can cancel any time during the trial and pay nothing.
- How you pay: payments are handled by Stripe, our payment provider. We never see or store your full card details.
- Cancelling: you can cancel any time from the billing portal in your account, and you keep Mila Pro until the end of the period you have already paid for — we do not cut you off mid-month.
- If your subscription ends: everything you have already created — your plans, recipes, shopping lists — stays yours and remains usable, for free, forever. Only the actions that cost us money to run (new plans, swaps, imports) need an active subscription.
4. Your cancellation rights
Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013, you have a 14-day cooling-off period when you take out a subscription.
- If this is your first subscription: the 14-day free trial means you pay nothing inside that window anyway. Cancel during the trial and you are never charged.
- If you are re-subscribing after a previous subscription ended: the free trial applies to first subscriptions only, so you are charged from day one. You still have the 14-day cooling-off right. Because Mila Pro is a digital service you can use straight away: by starting your subscription, you ask us to begin providing it immediately, and you understand that your 14-day right to cancel ends once we have started. If you cancel after we have begun, we may keep a fair amount for the part of the period already provided.
Nothing here removes any statutory right you have as a consumer.
5. Allergen checking: what Mila does and doesn’t promise
This is the most important section, and we write it plainly on purpose. For allergens you mark as severe, Mila runs a rule-based check of each recipe’s ingredient list — a fixed word-matching check, not an AI judgement. The AI writes the recipes; the safety check itself is deterministic.
What Mila does:
- Reads the ingredient list of every recipe against each allergen you mark as severe.
- Flags any recipe that names a severe allergen, and only marks a recipe “checked” once it has verified it.
- Re-checks a recipe whenever you edit its ingredients, so a “checked” mark never goes stale.
What Mila does not do:
- It does not catch cross-contamination in a shared kitchen or factory — it can’t see how a dish was prepared.
- It does not read “may contain” trace warnings or manufacturing changes on packaged products.
- It cannot catch an allergen that isn’t named in a recipe’s ingredient list.
Severe vs preference: allergens you mark severe get the checking described above. Allergens or foods you mark as a preference steer what Mila plans, but they are not safety-verified.
Always read the actual product label on anything packaged. Mila can make mistakes, and it is not a substitute for your own checks or for medical advice.
6. Acceptable use
Please use Mila as intended: don’t abuse or overload the service, don’t resell or share your access, and don’t try to reach other people’s data or break the service’s security.
7. Liability
We provide Mila in good faith and take real care, especially with the allergen checking above, but we can’t promise it will be perfect or uninterrupted. To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or unexpected losses, and our total liability to you is limited to what you have paid us in the previous 12 months.
Nothing in these terms excludes or limits our liability where the law does not allow it — including liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, or for fraud. Your statutory rights as a consumer are not affected.
8. Ending the agreement, and changes to these terms
You can stop using Mila and close your account at any time. We may suspend or end an account that breaches these terms.
We may update these terms — for example, if our pricing, features, or trading identity change. If a change is material, we will ask you to agree to the updated terms before you carry on (and, where money is involved, at your next checkout). The “last updated” date at the top always reflects the current version.
9. Contact and governing law
Questions about these terms? Email us at the address shown on your Allergens & safety page and in the app footer (the same address you’d use for any feedback).
These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have jurisdiction.
